Our oceans need your help.

Our oceans need your help. Coastal areas comprise 20 percent of the Earth’s surface yet contain over 50 percent of the entire human population. This gives many of us the chance to take a stance in benefiting our environment. It is important to preserve this life, as us humans are interlinked with nature. Reefs and mangroves protect the shoreline by absorbing at least 70-90 percent of the energy of wind-generated waves.
If nature is protecting us, why aren’t we doing anything?
about us

We are a group of high school students from Singapore American School who campaign and support the protection of our oceans. You can call us young activists for the marine environment. Blue Planet Initiative aims to practice and promote marine conservation through direct service and indirect service. We hope to inspire members to be global environmental thinkers and leaders, advocate a marine conservancy culture in the region and to support NGOs in their campaigns for policy changes and research.

Our club was founded 3 years ago, rising from the smokescreen of plastic straws and bottles clogging up our oceans. When the SAS community saw the dangers that these materials could do to the wellbeing of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems, we knew we had to take a stand. And so, the Blue Planet Initiative was created.
The oceans support the Earth’s largest ecosystems. The diversity and productivity of the world’s oceans is a vital interest for humankind. Our security, our economy, our very survival all require healthy oceans.
"No water, No life. No blue, No green." - Sylvia A. Earle

Three major man-made problems that threaten the marine world are namely: unsustainable fishing, pollution, and global warming. These human-related activities destabilize the natural equilibrium of the hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere which will eventually harm humanity in the long-term. The broader significance of the club has to do with the emphasis on individual concerted efforts targeted at inspiring changes and reforms on a local or regional scale (Coral Triangle) as well as supporting international far-reaching NGOs in hopes of turning the tide.
