Coral Reef

Why Reefs?

Coral reefs are crucial to biodiversity in the oceans. They are dazzling underwater rainforests, full of patterns, colors, and all kinds of creatures that depend on the corals. They shelter and feed countless sea-dwelling animals. Humans depend on them, too—6 million fisherman harvest from coral reefs around the world. In spite of all this, coral reefs are under attack by the human race. Corals are massacred by pollutants, poisons, acids, dynamite (for fishing) and overfishing. These little ecosystems are being decimated and if it goes on like this our world will be irreparably damaged forever.

The Committee

The Blue Planet Initiative Club has a committee dedicated to the preservation and protection of our coral reefs. They raise funds through fun events—pool parties, sales, etc—to adopt one coral reef and protect it from destruction by pollution or farming. The committee is one of the largest in the club, with many hands always on deck to protect this vital part of our marine ecosystem. Below is a link to events linked to the coral reef project.
